Development of Locally Managed Areas for Restoration and Sustainable Use of Coastal Eco-systems with Involvement of Local Stakeholders
Achievement at a glance
Development of scientific baseline, guidance and skill training for related stakeholders in implementing restoration and uses of coastal habitats conducted by the research institutions such as Institute of Oceanography with funding from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, provincial authorities of Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang, Quang Ngai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces.Implementation of series of activities related to restoration and sustainable use, including inter alia:
* Restoration and management of coral reefs for tourism in Nha Trang Bay by Vinpearl Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa bird net company & Tri Nguyen Tourist under the MOUs signed between these sectors with Khanh Hoa Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Institute of Oceanography.
* Investment from Six Sense Ninh Bay for habitat assessment, zoning and restoration of reef corals for tourist purposes in the waters bordering the Resort
* Habitat assessment, Training for awareness and monitoring methods & Monitoring of habitat status and resources by volunteer group at Ninh Hai Commune (Binh Dinh prov.) with funding from GEF SGP and local authority
* Investment from Ngoc Hien Pearl for restoration of pearl oyster and reef rehabilitation for tourist promotion in Phu Quoc islands (Kien Giang prov.)
* Investment for habitat assessment, zoning for conservation, restoration and tourist activities from some private companies in Phu Quoc islands (Veranda, Ecolux, AB)
* Involvement of local community for coral restoration at Con Dao National Park (Ba Ria - Vung Tau prov.)
Challenges faced in implementation
Limited knowledge on eco-biological characteristics of target species;Short view of managers and fishermen on ecological & economic benefit from conservation and restoration
Inadequacies in mobilizing human and financial resources from business and community;
Insufficient policies appropriate for marine area management;
Low enforcement of law and regulation on the sea;
