Progress report for
Development of Locally Managed Areas for Restoration and Sustainable Use of Coastal Eco-systems with Involvement of Local Stakeholders
Achievement at a glance
There has been efforts from the scientific institutions as the Institute of Oceanography in developing baseline data for management options, techniques for habitat restoration and training local people in management and restoration. These scientific activities have been funded by Government (ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and provincial authorities).At the local level, a number of activities regarding restoration and sustainable use of coastal habitats and resources were conducted, including inter alia:
* Restoration and management of coral reefs for sustainable tourism in Nha Trang Bay under the MOUs signed between Khanh Hoa Department of Environment & Natural resources, Institute of Oceanography and 3 companies (Vinperl Nha Trang, Bird net Company & Tri Nguyen Tourism).
* Habitat assessment, zoning and hard coral restoration made by Six Sense Ninh Van Bay with consultation of scientists.
* Restoration of pearl oysters and habitat rehabilitation for tourist promotion at 2 sites conducted by Ngoc Hien Pearl Company
* Habitat assessment & monitoring, Training for awareness and methods, Monitoring of habitat status and resources by volunteer group in Nhon Hai Commune (Binh Dinh prov.) funded by GEF SGP and local authority
* Mapping habitats and zoning for multiple uses of waters around islands by some companies at Phu Quoc islands (Veranda, AB, Ecolux...) with consultation from experts
* Restoration of hard corals at ConDao National Park with involvement of local community
Challenges faced in implementation
Limited knowledge on eco-biological characteristics of target species;Short view of managers and fishermen on ecological & economic benefit from conservation and restoration
Inadequacies in mobilizing human and financial resources from business and community;
In-sufficient policies appropriate for marine area management;
Low enforcement of law and regulation on the sea
