Background
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), is organizing a capacity-building workshop titled “Enhancing Implementation of UNOC3 Voluntary Commitments with a Focus on Ocean–Climate Interlinkages: Capacity-Building Workshop for the Asia–Pacific Region”, to be held at the United Nations Conference Centre, ESCAP, Bangkok, Thailand, from 26 to 27 October 2026.
The Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held in Nice in June 2025, generated more than 800 new voluntary commitments, many of which address the ocean–climate nexus. These commitments, if effectively implemented, can make an important contribution to advancing both SDG13 and SDG14 locally and globally. This workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of voluntary commitment holders to implement their commitments by facilitating peer learning; identifying common gaps and challenges, as well as innovative solutions; and promoting dialogue with partners on opportunities for potential collaboration. The workshop will also feature a guidance session on designing effective voluntary commitments in the lead up to the 2028 UN Ocean Conference in Busan.
