Background
Marking an unprecedented watershed moment for the international community, the United Nations 2023 Water Conference in March 2023 represented the first UN-convened Conference on water in nearly half a century. Thousands of world leaders, leading voices from civil society, business, and youth, Indigenous Peoples and women gathered in New York to contribute to the once in a generation event, by making commitments and calling for greater action to protect and shape a sustainable future.
A main outcome of the Conference is the Water Action Agenda. The Water Action Agenda is the collection of all water-related voluntary commitments to accelerate progress in the next five years of the Water Action Decade 2018-2028 and second half of the 2030 Agenda. Building on on-going efforts and utilizing the political momentum created by the Conference, the Water Action Agenda aims to mobilize action across countries, sectors and stakeholders to meet the global water and sanitation related goals and targets. A main objective of the Agenda is to turn the political momentum created by the UN 2023 Water Conference into tangible and ambitious action.
As a follow up for the UN 2023 Conference and the Water Action Agenda, the SDG 6 / Water Action Agenda Special Event will provide an analysis of water-related progress, across sectors and other SDGs and global frameworks, showcase the success stories and lessons learned and generate new commitments to the Water Action Agenda. It will also allow for an in-depth discussion on the findings of the SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2023.
