UNIDO
Thank you chair
UNIDO reinforces the earlier statements made in regard to the interrelatedness of the
themes under consideration. In doing so, UNIDO wishes to emphasize the contribution to
be made by the producers and providers of goods and services. Mr Yumkellah, DG of
UNIDO, launched an organization wide green industry initiative to focus attention on the
role of industry in moving forward in particular the agendas of SCP, waste and chemicals.
We launched the initiative for Asia in Manila last year with Gove of Phil, UNEP, ESCAP
an ILO. UnIido is following up the recommendations and commitments and expanding
the initiatives to other emerging and developing regions
Advancing the green industry agenda is a two-pronged approach. Firstly all producers of
goods and services need to reduce their use of energy, water and materials and reduce
their emissions and waste. This is the greening of industry agenda. This however also
requires a vibrant supply of innovative environmental goods and services, including for
example waste management and recycling services and environmental technologies.
These are the green industries of today and the future.
In many cases implementation of green industry practices and technologies is possible
with available practices, technology and knowledge, provided available financial,
management and technical resources are being focused and directed towards more
sustainable patterns of production.
We have been pleased to hear repeated references during the past two weeks to the
contributions made by the National Cleaner Production Centres, set up jointly by UNIDO
and UNEP. Jointly with these centres in around 50 countries we have developed a way
forward to scale up and mainstream resource efficient and cleaner production. This has to
include two strategies. Firstly we must apply known best practices on a larger scale ?
UNIDO is already working to do this with a growing group of partners, both within the
UN system (UNEP, ILO, ESCAP, UNCTAD and others) and outside the UN System,
including for example the EU SWITCH programme on Sustainable Consumption and
production in Asia. Secondly we need new solutions that help us achieve progress better,
faster and at a larger scale. This will require innovation in methods, practices,
technologies and finance for implementation. We avail ourselves as well as the
knowledge and experience of the global network to share lessons learned with member
states, UN agencies and the major groups.
UNIDO stands ready to support an inclusive and transparent process that takes the review
findings from this CSD session to an effective set of policies and commitments at CSD19
including a 10 yr framework of programmes that provides balanced support for
sustainable consumption and sustainable production.
Thank you
