"The UNIDO delegate echoed the earlier interventions by the distinguished delegates of
the United States of America and Cambodia in stressing the importance of cleaner
production and application of clean technologies and safe chemicals. UNIDO supports
cleaner production initiatives globally in some 50 developing and transition countries, in
particular through National Cleaner Production Centres. Cleaner production contributes
to productive use of resources, including energy and water, minimisation of wastes and
pollution and reducing risks to workers, communities and consumers, and this is good for
industrial development, creating jobs and addressing poverty. While consumption and
production are intrinsincly linked, there is both a need for and scope for specific
inititiatives aimed at cleaner production. Cleaner production is a cross-cutting
implementation mechanism for the thematic priorities considered under this CSD,
sustainable consumption and production, waste and chemicals, as well as elsewhere, for
example on climate change. The UNIDO delegate called upon distinguised VSD
delegates to take note that the good experiences in cleaner production needs to be
replicated, and consider specifically how knowlege, technology and finance can be made
available, and human and institutional capacities created for large scale adaptation and
adoption of cleaner production"
