Together 2030
TOGETHER 2030 STATEMENT for Of ficial Session, HLPF 2017
Leveraging interlinkages for effective implementation of SDGs
14 July, 09:00 - 13:00
United Nations, New York
Delivered by Jo Howard, Institute of Development Studies, United Kingdom
Your excellencies,
Distinguished delegates,
Dear colleagues,
My name is Jo Howard and I am speaking on behalf of Together 2030, an initiative of over 500
organizations that represents a global mosaic of civil society working across 90 countries on
every sustainable development goal.
As civil society, we see in our communities how the challenges we are trying to address through
the SDGs develop side-by-side. We know that we cannot discuss climate change without
discussing access to livelihoods, that we cannot talk about access to livelihoods without talking
about women’s rights, and without considering inequality and how it affects the most
marginalized. The universal, and interlinked nature of the SDGs demand a holistic approach
that connects the goals rather than separates them into silos. Specifically, this requires
coordination with civil society stakeholders at local and regional as well as national and global
levels and strengthened mechanisms for accountability.
In order to preserve the integrated nature of the SDGs, VNR countries should commit to review
all the SDGs and their interlinkages every year.
It is also critical that a bold Ministerial Declaration reinforces the commitment to all the SDGs
and for their integrated implementation, including the means for their implementation.
Further, we urge you to remember the interlinkages between the 2030 Agenda and other key
global frameworks: The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Addis Ababa Action
Agenda, the New Urban Agenda, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and, particularly to
recognize “the synergies between the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030
Agenda." Only with policy coherence across the frameworks will we, as partners in sustainable
development, achieve a stable, inclusive, healthy and thriving world.
Thank you
