Thailand
Mr. Chairman,
First of all, I wish to congratulate you on yr election to the Bureau of the CSD 16. I have learnt of yr great performance on the issue of sustainable development from my colleague here in New York, and thus confident that with you there in the Bureau representing Asian Group, this Commission session will conclude successfully.
I also take this opportunity to thank the panelists.
Mr. Chairman.
I wish to reiterate the points made by my Foreign Minister at this year?s ESCAP meeting held in Bangkok last April. The food crisis did not arise in isolation. It is, as the panelists have mentioned, linked with climate change, water problems and soaring oil prices. All these challenges and their implications must be addressed together.
We need to strike a balance between food security and energy security. Given the food-energy nexus, we need cooperation at all levels.
On Thailand?s part, we are seriously looking into strategies and measures to increase agricultural productivity, ensure sound water management and promote energy security. Our Integrated Water Resources management bring together stakeholders to determine how to meet the long term need for water. On Energy, We will continue to explore and expand the use of alternative energy with the promotion of new research in this field.
I thank you Mr Chairman.
