Rio+20 PrepCom 1
Switzerland’s comments on the Co-Chair’s Summary
Thank you Mr. Chair,
On Para 12
This conference will offer us the opportunity to strengthen the institutional framework for
Sustainable Development. As highlighted by your summary, we need a better coordination
and cooperation among international organizations and processes to reduce the fragmentation
that affects the different features of Sustainable Development. Indeed, we need the three
pillars of Sustainable Development to converge. Nonetheless, as stressed by other delegations,
there is a need not only for strong and coordinated institutions, but also for clear goals.
In this context, the experience of the MDGs could be taken into account. The MDG agenda
plaid undoubtedly a catalytic role fostering global political action for development.
Para 77
Add at the end: It was highlighted that a clear overview of the existing commitments and
objectives would be crucial to ensure visibility and coherence and strengthen
commitment. The hope was expressed that the Rio+20 Conference, building on the
experience of the MDGs, will make also a concrete contribution with regard to clarifying
and further reinforcing our common goals and that addressing this challenge could
make the Rio+20 conference a summit.
To conclude, let me express the gratefulness of the Swiss delegation to you and to the other
members of the Bureau for the restless efforts you have deployed in this first PrepCom. We
welcome the very constructive atmosphere that has characterised our works under your
guidance. The discussions have been fruitful, and it seems that we have a concrete roadmap to
lead us in the preparation of the 2012 Conference.
