Intervention of Switzerland:
Madam Chair,
Let me first thank you and the panelists for their interesting perspectives.
• One of the main conclusions of the First Global Meeting of the 10YFP that took place here in New York recently has been that SCP is central to the Sustainable Development Goals.
• As we have already heard several times in this session, in the context of the SDGs, SCP has a highly cross-cutting character.
• Switzerland highly appreciates that the centrality of SCP for sustainable development is widely recognized, as it appears looking at the 17 SDGs.
• While the SDGs contain a dedicated Goal on SCP, in addition, SCP is being addressed in a cross-cutting manner through a series of targets.
• Goal 12 is linked to 14 SDGs – which makes it the most interlinked Goal of all SDGs.
• Therefore, we consider the 10YFP to be a key implementing mechanism of the Post-2015 Agenda.
• Switzerland has been an active supporter of the 10YFP since the beginning, both as a member of its Board as well as through its Programmes.
• We are thus pleased to see that the initial five Programmes have all been successfully launched and started implementing activities.
• Further, my country actively supports the development of an additional Programme - on Sustainable Food Systems – under the 10YFP. Switzerland stands ready to play a leading role in ensuring its effective implementation.
• This Programme will be instrumental in the implementation of SDG 2 on ending hunger and promoting sustainable agriculture, in conjunction with a series of other targets, including on health, resource-efficiency, reduction of food losses and waste, and several others.
• We conclude that SCP is a key component to the SDGs and thus invite all member countries and other stakeholders to support the implementation of the 10YFP at global, regional and national level.
