Republic of Korea
Statement by the Representative of the Republic of Korea
Sixth Session of Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (Goals and Targets)
23 June 2015, New York
Thank you, Mr. Co-Facilitator, for giving me the floor.
1. The Republic of Korea commends the leadership of the Co-Facilitators for providing us with the opportunity to improve some of the targets as proposed in Annex 1.
2. We note that the zero draft incorporates all of the 17 SDGs and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG), which have served as the main basis of our negotiations. However, we hope that the proposed revisions to the 21 targets as included in the annex will also be merged into the body text. We would like to reiterate once again that good targets are a prerequisite for good implementation.
3. We fully support paragraph 2, which encapsulates the key aspects of the goals and targets. However, we believe that there is still room for improvement in terms of substance. For example, we do not consider it fitting to specifically state in the Summit outcome document that the work on the global indicator framework will be completed by March of 2016. We are also not fully convinced of the examples of “other relevant ongoing processes” in paragraph 4.
4. The Korean Government believes that clear and robust goals, targets, and indicators are critical to the achievement of sustainable development. In this regard, we hope to see consensus on integrating the revised targets into the body text, thereby eventually rendering the annex unnecessary in the final outcome document.
Thank you. /END/
