High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
After almost two years of implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable
Development, the results are encouraging and inspire further bold and transformative
steps aiming to shift the world on a sustainable and resilient course. Solid efforts have
been done, yet much more work has to be put in place, as achieving the SDGs requires a
truly global pa1inership.
We are now witnessing a world facing tremendous challenges to sustainable
development, with more 'than 700 million people living in conditions of extreme poverty,
enonnous discrepancies of opportunities and rising inequalities.
Under the global umbrella of the 2030 Agenda, we all acknowledge the 17 development
goals as universal and indivisible, pledging common action, shared responsibility and a
strong ethic of global citizenship.
The Government of the Republic of Moldova, partnering with UNDP and other
stakeholders have worked closely to "localize" the SDGs at the national level.
Last year, the Moldovan Government established the National Coordination Council for
Sustainable Development, chaired by the Prim-minister. Under the auspices of this body,
we started the process of national adaptation, integration and implementation of the
SDGs. The 169 global targets were mapped against the national policies and strategies
·out of which 107, equal to 63% of global targets, were considered particularly relevant
for the Republic of Moldova.
Additionally, a data ecosystem mapping was conducted to assess the availability of data
and institutional monitoring capacity. This exercise helped to nationalize global
indicators and define the country specific ones.
A new Partnership Framework for Sustainable Development (PFSD) for the period 2018-
2022 was signed between the Government of my country and UNDP Moldova which is
attuned with the provisions of the 2030 Agenda and the EU-RM Association Agreement
and will support implementing effective reforms aiming at modernizing both our
economy and society.
The State Chancellery, the Swiss Agency for Developmentand Cooperation and the UN
have also embarked on a joint initiative to evaluate and revise the National Development
Strategy "Moldova 2020" to fully align it with the Sustainable Development Goals and
other international commitments. The revised Strategy will be a roadmap to implement
an effective reform agenda that will maximize the benefits for all the people, including
those vulnerable.
In order to ensure an accurate and thorough understanding of the concept of
sustainability, multiple awareness raising campaigns, public lectures and other events
were organized countrywide, aiming at sensitizing the population and promoting core
values as sustainable lifestyles and corporate liability.
The Ministerial Declaration of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable
Development and the ECOSOC High Level Segment to be adopted later this week reemphasizes
the urgency to eradicate poverty, end hunger and ensure healthy lives for all.
These pervasive disparities require immediate action in order to provide equal
opportunities so that all human beings can fulfill their aspirations. We share the emphasis
in the Declaration on the critical role of infrastructure, industry and innovation to achieve
inclusive and sustainable economic growth and poverty eradication. At the same time,
gender equality, also under review this year, is another key priority for my Government,
as gender inequality is evidenced in the majority of the SDGs.
Distinguished delegates,
The 2030 Agenda is an imperative of the modern world and a roadmap to the future we
all strive for. Realizing the current and emerging challenges that our planet and
community are facing nowadays, the Republic of Moldova reconfirms its international
commitment to work jointly to transform our strong ambitions into a better place for us
and the generations to come.
I thank you.
