Major Group: Science & Technology
Closing statement by the Scientific and Technological Community
Friday 2 March 2007- Afternoon Session
Mme. Chair,
For the Scientific and Technological Community, it is extremely important to realize we
are at a critical stage of decision regarding abatement of greenhouse gases emissions, due
to the impending climate change effects.
It has been acknowledged that all available energy options will need to be considered for
an adjustment to a world that requires much less carbon liberation to the environment.
We agree. And when we say all energy technologies are needed, we understand they
should be carbon-free, or as much low-carbon as possible, in net balance.
In fact, these changes require to immediately develop and demonstrate carbon
sequestration technologies, to substantially improve the efficient use of energy, and to
seriously implement energy conservation programs.
Mme. Chair, what we need is a willingness to accelerate such processes through readily
negotiated policies.
The Scientific and Technological Community considers this CSD cycle as an occasion to
establish a global frame to address these energy issues, and is very much concerned that
CSD might miss its opportunity to act in due time.
Thank you, Mme. Chair
