NGO Major Group, statement on contributions of CSD to Rio+20
The NGO Major group would like to make two points about what should be taken from
CSD19 to Rio 2012.
Firstly, the discussions at CSD19 have highlighted the need to reshape our institutions and
markets. It is clear that the current model produces an unrele nting materialism and
consumerism whereas if we are to achieve sustainability we need to implement institutional
change promoting a sufficiency in which wellbeing for all life can be achieved.
One element of this could be to develop a support process to assist all countries in fulfilling
their commitments to phase out unsustainable subsidy policies so that these resources can
be used instead to fund SCP activities and the transition to a green economy.
Secondly, we call on governments to fulfill the commitments that were made in Rio and
Johannesburg to deliver national action plans to achieve sustainability. The 10 year
framework of programmes will be important in this respect, as it could help to further
integrate governments local and national action plans on SCP with local and national
strategies and education for sustainable development. All of this will enable us to overcome
the remaining gaps in implementation, strengthen institutional frameworks to better
address emerging issues, and make the transition to a responsible way of one planet living.
