PROPOSALS BY ASSOCIATION OF WORLD CITIZENS, A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE COMMONS CLUSTER, TO THE OPEN WORKING GROUP 7 (OWG 7)
ON SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT, JANUARY 7, 2014
Thank you, Mr. Co-Chair.
The Association of World Citizens is a founding member of the Commons Cluster.
Cooperatives are the business arm of the commons with 1 billion members worldwide.
Cooperatives are owner operated and therefore benefit the specific needs of their members and tend not to waste resources. Transportation cooperatives have proved useful in meeting special needs, not covered by public transportation, such as those of schools, the disabled, outlying areas with low population density; or to promote the sharing of farm vehicles, cars and rides.
Transportation is inextricably linked with all other topics being dealt with in Open Working Group 7 within the Earth System as a Whole. The Earth System should therefore be an overarching goal that could be formulated as follows:
All people are held accountable for their individual impact on the Earth System.
Within this transportation could constitute two targets that would aim for 100 per cent recycling of vehicle parts and the use of 100 per cent renewable fuel.
As the subject of an overarching SDG, the Earth System would in effect become a global commons stewarded by all people together and could be administered by the UN’s Trusteeship Council.
Scientists are establishing both planetary boundaries within which human life can exist and metrics that would allow the impact of individual people to be measured. We shall submit some relevant papers to the UN Secretariat together with this statement.
Thank you, Mr. Co-Chair.
