Major Group: Local Authorities
Local Authority statement during the multistakeholder dialogue at
CSD 19 IPM
Delivered by Susanne Salz, ICLEI ? Local Governments for
Sustainability, on 4 March 2011
Thank you Chair.
As the level of government closest to people, we will continue to involve
the local citizens.
From the themes in this thematic cluster, it is in particular on Transport,
Waste and Sustainable consumption and production that Local
Authorities will continue to play a crucial role. The discussions this
week have clearly shown the important roles local government can play,
have played and will continue to play.
We encourage all member states and UN bodies to work with Local
Authorities and to provide an enabling framework for Local Authorities.
This is the case both for the outcomes of CSD as well as in the national
contexts. Local Authorities stand ready to support the implementation of
the CSD decisions, and to link these to Rio+20.
