BEFORE THE TENTH SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
OPEN WORKING GROUP ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
INDICATIVE Dl:BATE ON CONSOLIDATION OF FOCUS AREAS,
FOCUSING ON POSSIBLE GOALS AND TARGETS:
"WATER AND SANITATION, SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE,
FOOD SECURITYAND NUTRITION"
NEW YORK, 1 APRIL 2014
Co Chair,
At the outset I wish to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation for all
your efforts and for presenting the revised document which is a vital contribution
to our work.
My delegation appreciates the inclusion of Water and Sanitation in our
discussions and the recognized centrality of water in the post-2015 agenda. In this
context, we would be supportive of the recommendations to include a stand alone
goal on water and sanitation. The structure of the water goal should reflect that we
need to significantly improve the implementation of integrated water resources
management at all :levels as appropriate; protect and sustainably manage
ecosystems, address water-related disasters, as well as water scarcity; mcrease
water quality, improve water efficiency and reduce water losses.
Universal acces~: to safe water and sanitation is within reach. But we can
achieve this only when a future water and sanitation goal entails a clear
commitment to progressively eliminate the inequalities between those who have
and those who don't have access to water and sanitation.
Good management of water systems is challenging due to the unique nature
of water, cross sectoral coordination has been in place to support a holistic
approach to water scarcity. Water cooperation supports the sharing of knowledge
about the scientific aspects of water including data and information exchange in
relation to the role OJ:- water in preserving ecosystems, human wellbeing and
sustainable development. Moreover, water cooperation across national borders can
help ensure water sei~urity, promote environmental sustainability and create
tangible development benefits.
The significance of the agricultural sector in bringing about economic
growth and sustainab:.e development cannot be understated. As a cross cutting
issue, we believe that growth originating in agriculture can be more effective at
reducing poverty than growth arising from other economic sectors. It has offered
an effective leverage point to alleviate poverty, hunger and malnutrition
worldwide.
At a time where agriculture is of utmost importance in providing people with
means of living, it is hoped that with greater global collaboration, investment and
innovation among all stakeholders, food security, environmental sustainability and
economic opportunity would be realized through agriculture as we continue to
outline the goals in the post 2015 development framework.
I thank you.
