Iran
Intervention by: Ahmad Rajabi
Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Before the second session for the Preparatory
Committee of the United Nations
Conference on Sustainable Development
New York, 8 March 2011
Co-chair;
My delegation associate itself with the statement made
by Argentina on behalf of G-77 and china.
I raise some points in response to questions presented by
UNCSD Bureau as follows:
1- 2012 conference is an opportunity for the United
Nations and member states to address the failure,
implementing the Rio and Johannesburg outcomes and
considering changes which have occurred since 1992.
2- Sustainable development is a key element to
achieving the internationally agreed development goals,
including the MDGs, and those contained in the
Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.
3- We should focus on three pillars of sustainable
development (economic development, social
development and environmental protection) and give
equal weight to each of three pillars.
4- Despite some achievements, on protecting the
environment and sustainable development, an evaluation
of the results since the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992 and
the World Summit on Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg in 2002, indicates that major gaps
implementation and many unfulfilled commitments exist
by the international community when the world is still
suffering from the global crises and climate change.
5- Poverty eradication and changing unsustainable
patterns of production and consumption and protecting
and managing the natural resource base of economic and
social development are comprehensive objectives and
essential requirements for sustainable development.
6- Transfer of technology should become the focus of the
international community and the UN System, including
at the highest political level. This should include the full
implementation of the Bali Strategic Plan for Technology
Support and Capacity Building.
7- The Rio+20 should also identify ways for the UN
system to increase capacity building support for national
sustainable development plans and strategies in
developing countries.
8- “Green economy” should be considered in context of
sustainable development and poverty eradication and
conference of sustainable development should avoid a
theoretical discussion on green economy.
10- As we prepare for Rio + 20, we should set emphasis
on identifying gaps and challenges that have impeded the
implementations of those outcomes, and how to address
them. The preparation should start at local, national,
regional and global levels.
Thank you
