Mr. President,
at General Debate
of the High-Level Political Forum
on Sustainable Development Goals
New York, 17 July 2017
Allow me to highlight some pertinent points for SDGs implementation. In
the interest of time, I will not elaborate issues that Indonesia has raised
during our VNR presentation.
First, poverty eradication and prosperity enhancement need to address
two interconnected aspects , namely, improving the quality of human
resources and enhancing opportunities for sustainable livelihood . It
should also be supported by enabling environment, including gender
equality and partnership.
Second, while we have made much progress , more remains to be done .
While our poverty rate is decreasing, its pace has flattened during the
last 3 years. At the heart of this challenge is multidimensional poverty,
which requires intervention beyond economic growth.
This leads to my third point, that we need to be aware of the
interlinkages of issues. As an example, for an archipelagic nation as
Indonesia, sustainable use of marine resources and environmental
protection are closely related to poverty eradication. That is why we are
tackling seriously the issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
In this regard, we are heartened that this year, the UN accords special
attention to SDG 14 - both at this Forum and the recent Ocean
Conference.
Fourth, inclusive implementation is fundamental. Indonesia has
advanced this based on the principles of mutual trust, participation,
transparency and accountability. The Presidential Decree on SDGs
Implementation mandates the incorporation of four participation
platforms, namely, the Government, CSOs, business, and academics.
Finally, strengthened global partnership for means of implementation is
key. Indonesia stands ready to contribute through our South-South and
Triangular Cooperation programs:
Mr. President,
The discussions in this Forum highlights the urgency to act coherently at
national, regional and global levels, together among all stakeholders.
The good news is that we already have the framework, namely the
HLPF and the VNR. Our task now is to ensure that this framework can
serve effectively as the follow up and review mechanism of the 2030
Agenda.
This means our deliberations must lead to concrete actions. This also
means the HLPF must connect meaningfully with other international
processes. The ultimate goal is to support countries in their national
implementation, based on their actual needs. So that all countries can
progress together, and no one is left behind.
Thank you.
