STATEMENT BY THE PERMANENT MISSION OF HONDURAS TO THE UNITED NATIONS AT THE CLOSING OF THE 13th SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY’S OPEN WORKING GROUP ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
NEW YORK, JULY 19, 2014
My delegation wishes to recognize and thank the distinguished Co-chairs for the tremendous work, leadership and patience they have shown us from the moment they undertook this challenging and historic endeavor, while also expressing our gratitude to the Secretariat, delegates, and civil society representatives as we have all contributed in a invaluable way to craft the document in front of us, with the aim of reaching a compromised, balanced outcome. Since you have kindly opened the floor prior to adoption, I take the opportunity to make the following statement:
In regard to Goal 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages) and Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls), and specifically pertaining to targets 3.7 and 5.6 as presented in the final draft, my delegation finds the need to clearly state that for Honduras, concepts such as sexual health, reproductive health, sexual rights, reproductive rights, and family planning, do not include or contemplate abortion or termination of pregnancy, nor do we accept them as a way of controlling fertility or regulating population. This, based on our Constitution and relevant legislation, as well as on internationally recognized human rights, which state that the right to life is inviolable, including for the unborn child, and that life starts from the moment of conception.
We appreciate the chance to express our position at this time, given the complexity involving said targets. Thank you.
