Greece
Post-2015 Intergovernmental Negotiations, 20 February 2015 –
GREECE - Speaking points
At the outset, please allow me to join others in thanking you, the co-facilitators, for the discussion document you provided us, which we consider as a useful step forward.
Before starting, I would like to stress that Greece fully aligns itself with the statement made yesterday by the European Union and I would like to convey the following points from a national stand:
• We appreciate the reference to the importance of building peaceful and inclusive societies, strengthening institutions and promoting the rule of law and good governance.
• We fully agree with the objective to leave no-one behind and the need to reach the most disadvantaged and vulnerable.
• We also agree with the importance of addressing the special needs of the LDCs and people most in need.
• As regards the six essential elements put forward by the UNSG in his Synthesis Report, we believe that they could be used to facilitate the communication of the agenda and thus promote collective action.
• Several elements such as universality, human rights, democratic governance, gender equality, climate action must be given more emphasis. Moreover, as also mentioned by Latvia, Romania, Cyprus and other Delegations, we would like to stress the need to include in the Declaration an explicit reference to the respect of international law.
• Furthermore, we believe that Global Partnership is of high importance and should be part of the Declaration. In the context of the new global partnership, there is a need to promote enabling policy frameworks and policy coherence for sustainable development, while the new Global Partnership must mobilise all actors and resources, at all levels.
• Finally, as also mentioned by Peru, France, Bulgaria and others, we would like to propose to reflect in the Declaration of the Post 2015 Development Agenda the value of culture in the context of sustainable development.
Before concluding my intervention, I would like to reiterate our full support and express our readiness to work further under your leadership,
I thank you!
