Intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda
New York, 31 July 2015
Statement on behalf of the Delegation of Georgia
by Ms. Nino Shekriladze, Counsellor
of the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the United Nations
Dear co-facilitators,
Thank you for the revised draft that makes everybody in the room happier, not absolutely happy though. Thank you very much indeed to listening and reflecting on our concerns. But we still have one comment and it is regarding the Declaration, paragraph 24, more specifically, regarding the last sentence of the paragraph, which speaks about challenges certain categories of people experience. This sentence speaks about challenges only. And we strongly believe that in the part of the document, which is called ”The new Agenda”, we should not only say that challenge exists, but also state that existing challenges require attention and require action. Otherwise it would be simply stating the fact that is not new and that everybody knows about.
Therefore, we repeat our previous proposal to add the following words at the very end of the paragraph: “which must be adequately addressed”.
(Note: Paragraph will read as follows: 24. People who are vulnerable and must be empowered, and whose needs are reflected in the Goals and targets, include children, youth, persons with disabilities (of whom more than 80% live in poverty), older persons, indigenous peoples, migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons. People living in areas affected by conflict, crime, violence, terrorism and humanitarian emergencies are also experiencing severe challenges, which must be adequately addressed.
Thank you very much.
