Cyprus
Intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda
Session of 18-22 May 2015
Statement by Cyprus on Goals and Targets – 21 May 2015
Thank you, Mr. Co-facilitator. Cyprus aligns itself with the statement made by the European Union on the subject. This statement is from a national perspective.
First let me thank you co-facilitators for the revised targets paper which in our view is in the right direction and reflects many of the suggestions made at our March session. We would like to express our satisfaction with the work done in the revised paper and many of the suggested changes are quite reasonable and constructive. In particular we are very pleased to see target 14c on UNCLOS included in the revised paper something that has been requested by a very big number of countries during our March session and to express our contentment with the suggested change.
Mr. Co-facilitator, judging from the discussions we’ve had since last February it is clear that the OWG report is not at risk of falling apart. Its integral and indivisible nature, as well as its political balance have not been challenged by anyone. In this context we would like to reiterate the importance of the technical proofing of the targets without reopening the package, to double check them against the criteria we, member states, have set in order to improve these targets and not to worsen them. In this vein, the proposal in the revised paper does not aim at reopening the package but to adjust a very limited number of targets in order to make our set of goals and targets more credible and measurable and to ensure that their level of ambition is not compromised.
We thank you again for this work and counting on your leadership and guidance we look forward to see this proposal included in the zero-draft.
