Statement on Declaration by the Republic of Croatia
Post-2015 intergovernmental negotiations on the outcome document
(22nd-25th June 2015)
Mr. Co-Chair,
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Let me state first that Croatia aligns itself with the statement of the EU on the Declaration, and we are delivering this short statement in national capacity.
Croatia, with reference to the paragraphs 16-29 under the title „The new Agenda“, strongly endorses the objective of communicating the agenda in a concise and clear manner. We find this especially important for following reasons:
In order to achieve the vision, objectives and expected results of the transformative post-2015 agenda, it needs to be communicated in a clear and concise manner to different national stakeholders, and it needs to be understood by the general public and especially by young generations.
Croatia believes that our efforts on the sustainable development goals should be clearly understood and accepted. It is important to make sure that citizens, first and foremost on the national level, understand the aims of the global post-2015 agenda. They need to understand and support our belief that the change for the better is possible and that Post-2015 ambitions are attainable. Of course, in the future, it will be the responsibility of governments to keep its citizens duly informed about the implementation of the SDGs, and citizens need to feel that implmenting the SDGs is one of the very important fields governments are responsible and accountable for.
Finally, Croatia believes that clarity and concise manner of communicating the agenda is important also because the achievement and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals indeed relies heavily but not solely on the states’ actions. Other actors, from the civil society and the private sector, also need to be involved.
This is why we support a clear, univocal message of the Declaration, as a call for action by all stakeholders, which could only be achieved by a concise and clear agenda.
Thank you for your attention.
