Description
NBI is an intergovernmental organization, that make use of the shared water resources of the Nile Basin to meet each other’s demand. NBI works together with the Nile basin countries governments to achieve the 10 years strategy goals on water security, food security, energy security, environmental sustainability, climate change adaptation, and transboundary water governance. The member states are Burundi, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda. NBI operates through three offices Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office ENTRO, located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, mainly working on capacity building on energy and water resources governance. The Nile equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Project office NELSAP, located in Kigali, Rwanda. This office is supervising the implementation of the Rusumo Hydropower plant along the transboundary Akagera river. The Nile Secretariate NILE SEC, located in Entebbe, Uganda. is the regional office supervising all the ongoing projects in the Nile basin countries.
The global collaboration will accelerate and assist in achieving the NBI 10 year strategy, reporting for the SDG national and regional goals and in achieving the Africa Agenda of 2063.
All the ten riparian countries of the river Nile are beneficiaries (population in the Nile Basin is almost 200 million), partners are many including GEF, UNDP, World Bank, African Development Bank and GIZ.
