    Description
    The purpose is to engage student volunteer peer mentors in partnership with the Sport in Action Programme in Zambia. Thus, building capacity in terms of knowledge exchange and policy development towards the SDG's. The collaborative partnership with Sport in Action, Zambia, serves the objective of delivering student led knowledge exchange for capacity building and the co-creation of new knowledge. Students manage the project ensuring a peer led approach. They work with peer mentors from Sport in Action to develop young people's skills through a multidisciplinary methodology., embracing the principles of sustainable community development
    Expected Impact

    The research process is pedagogical in the sense that reciprocal learning is involved as part of the process. It involves a series of activities designed around community development, sport, drama, multimedia arts and poetry. It is important to identify the contributions young people make to policy development and their perspectives on how to build purposeful lives. This will be achieved by empowering the young people to critically conceptualize their own reality and co-create solutions to identified structural inequalities shaping that reality. The method is centred on capacity building the young people to utilise the process of critical pedagogy. Thus, building their confidence so that they can articulate perspectives on the policy/practice changes needed in order to achieve reality free prom oppression. The project is a collaboration with young people and local strategic partners. This is achieved by an equitable approach to project management and delivery based upon the Six Principles of Community Development: 1. Principles of social and environmental justice. 2. Vision of a just and sustainable world. 3. Values of equality, respect, dignity, trust, mutuality and reciprocity. 4. A process of critical consciousness through popular education (Critical Knowledge Exchange), practical projects (Applied Knowledge Exchange) and collective action for positive change. 5. Contextualizing practice in its political context. 6. A method that helps to analyse power and discrimination. young people are linked with policymakers to shape future interventions and approaches. this is achieved by knowledge exchange workshops and seminars, joining young people and identified policy makers in reconceptualising oppression and co creating new knowledge, policy and practice.

    Capacity

    Since 2009, Student volunteer peer mentors have supported the Sport in Action Programme in Zambia, building capacity terms of knowledge exchange and policy development. Since 2014, over 100 student volunteers collaborated with Sport in Action peer leaders to deliver life skills programmes in Kabwe and Lusaka, directly impacting the lives of over 3500 young people. Local schools have reported further impacts in terms of increased classroom attendance and educational engagement post intervention Students with specialist skills in Media and Film production, Journalism and Publishing have helped to enhance the profile and consequently the impact of Sport in Action, nationally and internationally, by producing high quality marketing literature, YouTube trailers, video documentaries and publications. Furthermore, Sports Coaching and Sport Studies student mentors have co-delivered the development and delivery of community activity and health programmes in Kabwe and Lusaka addressing HIV and Hepatitis B, impacting on the lives of approximately 1000 individuals. Student volunteer Physiotherapists have maintained the development and delivery of short first aid and basic injury prevention workshops in partnership with Sport in Action Peer Leaders in Kabwe and worked on placements at the IOC Regional Development Centre in Lusaka. The impact of this has been the co creation of new health education programmes. Latterly, Sexual Health students have been based in Lusaka supporting the delivery of key sexual health education messages to young people and supporting the education of teachers and sports leaders, this activity impacted on 5000 individuals and its success has been demonstrated through increased dissemination of key messages. To ensure a lasting and sustained legacy, the programme is now embedded within the Sports Coaching curriculum at UCLan, making international sports development a core element of teaching and learning. Moreover, students have raised over £5000 in funds to support many of Sport in Action projects in Zambia, including the building of a Sports Activity area in a Community School in Kabwe, supplying sports kits, sports equipment and lap tops and providing education scholarships to young Zambian peer leaders to help continue their education.

    Governed

    The project is governed through a collaborative partnership between Sport in Action and the university of Central Lancashire (UCLan). It is led by peer leaders from Zambia and UCLan. the young people have the 'voice' in terms of programme development and the co-creation of activities. It is based upon Freirian Principles of democratic education, knowledge exchange, and co-governance. Sustainability is key to this programme and built into the methodology. The process is empowering and as a result of taking part, the young people will develop key life skills that will not only help them overcome structural inequalities, but also raise their aspirations regarding education, employment and life. We intend to work with local educators to develop pathways for the young people to progress in their learning. The peer mentors will recruit and train the next group of peer 'animateurs' to animate others into action. The cycle will then continue. We will work with Sport in Action to support the long term development of this programme in Kabwe and seek to extend it throughout Zambia. he ethics review is undertaken by the Ethics Committee at UCLan, the students and young people who will be involved as peer mentors/educators, and the partner organisations. However, as standard when working with sensitive issues, such as sexual health, which may raise issues that could be upsetting to both the researchers and the participants, a plan must be in place. Firstly, everyone involved in the process will be briefed on how to deal with disclosure. The process will be explained and there will be a debrief afterwards. Counselling will be always on hand to support any young person who feels upset and young people will be told that they can leave at any time and are under no obligation to continue. As the young people are part of an established group, there will be ongoing 'open door' support outside the activities. The Definition of Safeguarding is protecting children, young people (under 18) and vulnerable adults from abuse or neglect. There is a joint responsibility to act where we become aware that a child, young person or vulnerable adult is at risk. It is particularly important in this context as the target group for the project involves young women who are at risk of Gender Based Violence and child Marriage.
