Description

To increase access to electricity through off -grid solar systems

Implementation of the Project/Activity

The initiative involves the introduction of solar incentives, including measures like tax exemptions on solar products, designed to encourage the adoption of solar technologies. Presently, the Ministry of Energy is taking the lead in driving the initiative forward via the Malawi Electricity Access Project, specifically through its off-grid component. This component is geared towards extending loans to solar companies, enabling them to offer solar products to vulnerable households at prices that are subsidized. Additionally, the project encompasses an endeavor aimed at enhancing the quality standards of imported solar goods. This is being achieved through the adoption of IEC Standards for the evaluation of solar product imports, overseen by the Malawi Bureau of Standard

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The initiative has an element of capacitating the Malawi Bureau of Standards with the IEC Standards for importing Solar Products that will help reduce importation of Counterfeit solar products

Coordination mechanisms

The initiative is currently being facilitated through the Malawi Electricity Access Project under the Off-Grid component being championed by the Ministry of Energy.

Evaluation

The Initiative will be evaluated based on Number of Solar products purchased by UltraPoor Households. Metrics such as increased electrification rates and improved quality of life due to enhanced access to electricity will also be used to assess the initiative's impact
