Description
La definicin oficial de una zona de refugio pesquero (ZRP de aqu en adelante) la podemos encontrar en la ley general de pesca y acuacultura sustentables en su artculo cuarto seccin LI; Zona de refugio pesquero son las reas delimitadas en las aguas de jurisdiccin federal, con la finalidad primordial de conservar y contribuir, natural o artificialmente, el desarrollo de los recursos pesqueros con motivo de su reproduccin, crecimiento o reclutamiento, as como preservar y proteger el ambiente que lo rodea.
Los refugios protegen 1,048.76 hectreas de la actividad pesquera. La vigencia de la red de refugios pesqueros es de cinco aos. Este tiempo puede favorecer la recuperacin de especies como la langosta, el caracol y el pargo. Al trmino de los cinco aos se evala su funcionamiento y se determina su restablecimiento por cinco aos ms. Debido a los resultados positivos la S.C.P.P. Cozumel est interesada en mantener sus refugios pesqueros en el largo plazo.
Es primordial poner atencin al tema de la vigilancia en las reas de pesca y de no pesca de la concesin de la S.C.P.P. Cozumel. La vigilancia es un tema muy sensible que no se debera de descuidar. Sera prudente implementar un programa de capacitacin para los miembros de la cooperativa, en el cual incluya temas de cambio climtico y las afectaciones de estos en las reas de pesca. Esta recomendacin sali de la misma cooperativa ya que muchos pescadores cuentan con un conocimiento bsico de lo que es el cambio climtico pero no cuentan con la informacin o conocimiento para vincularlo con las amenazas a sus pesqueras y bienestar.
Los pescadores estn interesados en retomar el monitoreo y control del pez len. Tambien tienen el inters de realzar un proyecto de marcaje de langosta dentro de los refugios pesqueros para tratar de detectar el desbordamiento de langosta hacia sus reas de pesca. Adicionalmente desean monitorear con mayor detalle la poblacin de caracol rosado, una especie que actualmente no aprovechan (Porque estn auto vedados).
