    Au Bénin, les mangroves (Zones de mangroves du complexe Sud-ouest ; océan atlantique) représentent un écosystème côtier exceptionnel appartenant aux sites Ramsar et font face à une situation de destruction massive. Elles sont utilisées par la population locale à de nombreuses fins : récolte de poissons, bois de feu, production de sel et utilisation de médicaments. C’est dans le village de Djègbadji (bas-fond de sel) que provient une part importante du sel utilisé dans les cuisines au Bénin. Mais, cette usine artisanale à ciel ouvert de transformation du sable en chlorure de sodium est en réalité tributaire d’un besoin important de bois de chauffe. Malheureusement, cette ressource se raréfie et expose de plus en plus les mangroves à une surexploitation. Par conséquent, la perte des mangroves accroît la vulnérabilité de la population locale et la pauvreté. De plus, la destruction des mangroves libère du CO2 soutenant ainsi le réchauffement planétaire. Avec l’interdiction des coupes en 2016, les coopératives de femmes sont obligées de débourser assez pour payer le bois ; ce qui n’est pas sans conséquence sur leurs revenus. Néanmoins, les coupes continuent, et les traces de dégradation se font encore remarquer aisément. Le présent projet est donc initié pour principalement promouvoir une alternative au bois de chauffe respectueuse de l’environnement. Il s’agira de produire à partir des déchets organiques disponibles, du biogaz et de l’engrais organique à travers la mise en place d’un biodigesteur d’une part, et d’autre part, des charbons biologiques sous forme de briquettes. Cela permettra à ces femmes d’accéder à une énergie propre à moindre coût avec comme avantage l’augmentation de leurs revenus tout en préservant l’environnement. Cette action volontaire et muli-acteurs permettra de sauvegarder la biodiversité et les mangroves sources de conservation des zones marine et côtière.
