Description
Preparandome con Energía is a training program specialized in electricity, mechanics and english. This program has represented an incredible opportunity for Colon youth aiming to enter STEAM fields. We have worked closely with experts to develop a short but robust curriculum content so the participants can build on their existing knowledge (most of them come from technical schools) and achieve success in their future careers but also, to have an excellent performance in entry-level positions.
We have worked closely with experts to develop a short but robust curriculum content so the participants can build on their existing knowledge (most of them come from technical schools) and achieve success in their future careers but also, to have an excellent performance in entry-level positions. More than 300 hundred students in Colon were interested in this training. One key factor for their motivation was the addition of English classes to the program. We selected the eighty (80) best students. Most of them come from technical schools and are currently enrolled in or applying to the Technological University of Panama. The eighty (80) students were divided in 4 groups; 2 groups to received specialized classes in electricity and the other 2 groups to receive specialized classes in mechanics. All of them taking English classes in parallel. This structure allowed us to generate a greater sense of fellowship, competitiveness and commitment among the students. By working with a larger group of students, we generated greater visibility among non-participant UTP students, awakening their curiosity for future opportunities.
The program is being managed by AES Panama Foundation, coordinating organization and primary investor of the program. Technical courses were implemented by the Technological University of Panama. The U.S. Department of state contributed with a grant of 20% of the total budget of the program as part of their Cultural Affairs grants initiatives.
