Description
Seychelles aims to champion the development of the Sustainable Ocean Management (SOM) education programme to engage learners to become ocean literate and develop the Blue Economy. The adverse effects of climate change and exploitation within the Indian Ocean are issues that cannot be overlooked and needs engagement of the upcoming generations to elicit the mindset change required to mitigate harmful actions to the oceans. The project will engage secondary school teachers and students in a study to identify Key Objectives from National Science Teaching/Learning Programmes for Secondary Schools that can be adapted to reflect practices for SOM. The “new” objectives will be used for the development of both a separate curriculum and Teacher and Student Resources targeting effective communication of the Blue Economy Concept to 12-13 year olds. The study, the “new” curriculum and the teaching resources derived will be available to IORA member states who wish to develop a SOM agenda.
