Marine Africa: the role in excellence in capacity development through Science and Education to increase globally ocean health and quality of life

    The University of Algarve (UAlg) and its partners advocate that Science and Education are the pathways for achieving both Ecosystem Marine Protection and Blue Growth. Our partnership aims to inspire global thinking and transform daily actions into new creative ways to protect the global ocean through sustainable practices (SDG14). The strategies for the Health Ocean Future need to be shared and understood by all. This will allow the sustainable use of marine food resources, and their protection will also transform our collective relationship with the ocean through Knowledge and Love. Stopping the decline of Ocean Health in the next decade is crucial to heal the Earth; the interaction of the Ocean with Climate made this action a pivotal ally to recover our blue planet. We will contribute to this commitment through Higher Education and Research, with Distance Learning Courses, Master's and Ph.D. joint programs with African HEIs targeting the solution for in situ applied questions, involving protection and sustainable use of the marine ecosystems and species (SDG 14a). The team will partner with European HEI to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all (SDG4), through an effective Global Partnership (SDG17), mainly to increase the quality of life in African coastal areas. The Marine and Environmental Sciences Doctorate Program promoted by the University Agostinho Neto, University of Namibe, and UAlg will begin in 2023. This Ph.D. Program will enhance the global understanding of the Ocean, particularly the South-Atlantic Ocean at the ecosystem level and contribute to increasing biogeochemical monitoring on African coast which is critical to creating a capacity development to monitor global change, including the ocean, to conserve, restore, rewild, and care for Nature. The Marine Biodiversity, Fisheries and Conservation Professional Master Program, which will begin in 2022, is promoted by the UAlg and African HEI in Angola, Cape Vert, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique Namibia, and São Tomé and Principe. This program will allow graduate scientists to effectively regulate fishing and end destructive fishing practices. Capacity development in Aquaculture will be done by the UAlg and Smart and Sustainable Aquaculture CoLAB targeting non-feeding aquaculture techniques (Bivalves and algae) in coastal areas in Africa, that simultaneously decarbonize the planet and increase food security, among other sustainable approaches (ITMA) with no dependence on fisheries. Intensive courses to answer specific questions concerning the protection of emblematic marine species will also be also implemented in cooperation with local NGO The role of excellence in capacity development is to increase global ocean health and quality of life, including economic benefits to small African island developing States and least developed countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. A program will be specifically launched within these aims and each year grants will be awarded to allow African early-stage researchers to develop their thesis in situ (FCT-Ciência LP UNESCO, others). All these local actions targeting African developing countries, as SIDC and LDC will effectively contribute to global Ocean recovery and healing of the planet.
