    Description
    Intro

Kites for Peace is a movement for social change that uses arts, culture&recreation as a friendly vehicle for positive social impact in the Zimbabwean community. Our main project is the 150 community strong “Zimbabwe Cares Network”that unites communities across different causes, mainly humanitarian.Alleviating strife caused by the negative peace in Zimbabwe is our principal aim.Our country is not war-torn but the effects of poor economy and social structure negatively affects quality of life, prosperity&wellbeing and has left many in despair. We teach Positive Peace at individual and community level, focusing on unity&compassion. Our annual event is in commemoration of the International Day of Peace

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

Annual events take considerable planning to include all aspects of the movement-the charity stalls, art and cultural displays and recreational aspects to create an atmosphere which is welcoming and enjoyable yet impactful to the cause.Planning also includes marketing and building connections with partner organisations such as UNDP Zimbabwe and foreign embassies. It is executed by a voluntary organising team which liases with all stakeholders, including government concerns.Kite making/ Peace training workshops are planned by the team and implemented by volunteer teachers and caregivers with given guidelines. The activities of the network are independently planned by each individual organisation with support from KFP where we promote and advocate for them, and facilitate donations, contributions etc.Occasionally we host drives which benefit several charities at once. All activities are monitored with feedback loops directly to contributors/stakeholders in the relevant project and reported via social media for accountability. Due to economic and monetary instability in Zimbabwe, we avoid financial resource dependency. Contributions for the event is mostly in kind from corporate donors/sponsors as well as individuals ie advertising materials and marketing, facilities etc. Kite making and peace training workshops require volunteer trainers to use local recyclable, reusable material to make kites.Volunteerism is hugely promoted and we depend on volunteers to donate their time, expertise, skills and experience. We support them for transport costs, accessibility and food through funds raised through kite sales.Volunteerism is considered a part of the movement for peace through empowerment and purpose -contributing to change and supporting community organisations promotes this.

    Results/Outputs/Impacts

SDG16-positive peace education&empowering institutions.Social justice is cornerstone to our work in the community through informative platforms urging&educating every sector&level to reach the ideals of positive peace. SDG17-connecting&coordinating a network of over 150 community institutions and working together in different aspects of society, partnerships for the goals- eradicating poverty, climate action, life on land, quality education, gender equality, good health&wellbeing &zero hunger.Zim Economy has negative impact on our work.We alleviate this by being a sustainable model focused on non financial assets&volunteerism. We are not donor dependent.Aim to be used in schools where positive peace training is part of curriculum. Promoting non competitive recreational activities for stress management&depression. We leave no one behind:all inclusive model where every citizen, regardless of age, ability, income level etc is empowered to help others like them.Key message: Peace pledge (see below)

    Enabling factors and constraints

Success-Unique model not reliant on financial support, enables participation from all sectors.Kite flying is all inclusive, friendly vehicle for the project.Financial constraints overcome by changing goals, strategy and implementation to purely voluntary based, donors mostly contribute in kind.Social innovation-fully voluntary practises that effectively build ownership of projects, promotes collaboration and unity, non confrontational means of achieving social justice, recreation as a form of peacebuilding through engagement.Events/projects implemented at minimal financial cost-double edged benefits in community upliftment and volunteer empowerment

    Sustainability and replicability

Outcomes are sustained through commitment of youth and leaders in promoting the practise and community involvement because Value is felt. There is voluntary ownership of projects without financial burden.Community projects sustain the network through collaborative practises that they independently undertake and they benefit from cross cause collaboration. The movement is ever evolving and in motion according to need.Mindset shift and implementation of practises are easy to replicate within communities and nations.Peaceful institutions and partnerships for peace-wholly replicable anywhere-any place in any economic or political situation.Differing levels of peacebuilding possible depending on need.Youth are eager drivers of kite making/flying/event aspect and peace training. Kite festivals with peace message have already been implemented worldwide easily, plan to extend the charity network model into different communities and nations through liason with regional and international partners

    COVID-19 Impact

2020 Kites for Peace Festival was virtual due to the pandemic and drew participants from 20 countries.Charity organisations and local artists were highlighted and gained international exposure, following and support. The message went international with 4 other countries hosting festivals as they were allowed.Strong message of peace and unity as people flew kites alone but under one sky with the world.Kite making workshops are online, as well as peace training as groups seek out positive ways to engage online.Build back better from covid19 by continuing support of charitable community efforts, peace training, unity, community upliftment, collaboration, networking and positive recreational activities
