Implementation of the Project/Activity

The initiative is being carried out through both grid and off-grid components. The grid component, funded with 105 million USD, is being implemented by ESCOM (Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi). ESCOM's role involves connecting 180,000 customers to the grid. On the other hand, the off-grid component, with a funding of 30 million USD, is being implemented by the Ministry of Energy. The Ministry is providing loans to companies, enabling them to sell off-grid solar products to households at subsidized prices, with a target of around 200,000 households. The Project is being funded by the World Bank

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The Initiative has a technical assistance and capacity building element worth 15 Million USD Aimed at providing technical expertise to the project and building capacity of the staff in the implementing institutions

Coordination mechanisms

The initiative is governed by multiple stakeholders, including ESCOM and the Ministry of Energy. These entities are responsible for the implementation and coordination of their respective components

Evaluation

The initiative's success will be evaluated based on the number of households and public institutions that gain access to electricity through both grid and off-grid components. Metrics such as increased electrification rates and improved quality of life due to enhanced access to electricity will also be used to assess the initiative's impact. The initiative will also be evaluates through evaluating the number of policy and regulatory frameworks developed and adopted
