    Food Africa Project is an innovate public-private partnership between the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals Fund (SDG Fund) , Sahara Group- a member of the SDG Fund Private Sector Advisory Group (PSAG) , United Nation agencies, world renowned chefs- the Roca Brothers and the Kaduna State Government in Nigeria , directed at improving food security and nutrition and alleviating poverty through strengthening of the agro-food value chains, improving agricultural productivity and yields, creation of a food processing facility and promotion of access to markets in Nigeria.
    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    Food Africa Project is a collaborative initiative between Sahara Group, United Nation- Sustainable Development Goal Fund, Un Agencies, the Roca Brothers and the Kaduna State Government, directed at empowering the people and alleviating poverty through food security. The strategic project management approach is a forward and backward integration model aimed at optimizing the entire food value chain. Value chain development has become one of the best strategies public sectors employ to engage and attract private investment in the agribusiness sector.Food Africa is a forward and backward integration model that involves the development of a Food Collection and Processing Center (FCPC), a multi-disciplinary resource for the food supply chain, providing a combination of technical, educational, consulting and business development services. The collection center is proposed to operate 24hrs a day, based on rotation: man hour – 8 hours shift. The primary objective of the partnership is to:• Provide employment, eradicate poverty and empower the people - It is estimated that about 500,000 people will be impacted both directly and indirectly by the project.• Reduce food wastage while recycling food produce that do not meet with the standards demanded by potential off takers – local and international standards. • Identify and break barriers that keep farmers from entering and increasing production for wholesale and retail output• Assess the feasibility of improving and increasing production substantially to encourage the development of sustainable food infrastructure in Kaduna State, with initial investment in vegetables Food Africa Project is an agriculture initiative envisaged to integrate the entire food value chain – the farmer, wholesaler, retailer and consumer- providing a sustainable source of food security, poverty eradication, skill acquisition and social inclusiveness. The project strategy seeks to identify gaps for improvement in the conventional food supply chain, hence the initiation of a backward and forward integration model. By identifying such gaps, we believe that we can ensure value creation throughout the entire food supply chain through providing the enabling environment required to incite the farmers to inclining towards acclaimed farming best practice for a better and marketable produce. The identified gap is also expected to provide the farmers with a readily available and reliable market for offtake which is currently a major concern in the economy.

    Project Governance Structure:The project governance will be in three parts as described below1. The Project Board of Trustees2. The Project Management Team3. The Project Monitoring TeamProject Board of TrusteesThe membership of the Board of Trustees shall be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 persons, with representation from the UN (SDG-F), Sahara Group, Kaduna State Government. The Board shall have a maximum of 2 independent members (one African and one International) who have very good knowledge of the Agriculture business. The Board of Trustees will have overall supervision of the project to ensure project accountability by all parties involved in the project; Provide steer and advice on the project implementation, operations, management and operations; Approve all operational project funding budgets, detailed funding requirements and amounts to be disbursed on a quarterly basis throughout the life span of the project.Project Management TeamThe project management team shall be selected and appointed by the Board of Trustees. The project management team shall be a maximum of 4 persons, with each party to the project nominating a representative to the management team and one independent nomination to be agreed upon by the parties to the project. The project management team shall manage the day to day operations of the project.Project Monitoring TeamThe project monitoring team shall be a maximum of 3 persons. They shall be nominated by the project sponsors and approved by the Board of Trustees and shall be replaced by new nominees every six months after two quarterly report presentation to the Board of Trustees upon independent appraisal of the project operations. The members of the project monitoring team shall not be participants in the operation’s activities of the project and shall monitor the progress and success of the project based on their independence and in line with the approved project goals and objectives deliverables approved by the Board of Trustees along with the operational budget presented by the project management team.
