Description
The FINPAC (Finnish Pacific) Project is a regionally coordinated meteorological project targeting the adaptation needs of Pacific Island Communities (PICs) to the effects of climate change. Accordingly, the adaptation approach developed in this project is based on the development of the capacity of National Meteorological Services (NMSs) to respond to the growing needs of communities to prepare and respond to the changing weather patterns and climate trends using improved meteorological services.
Implementation of the Project/Activity

To achieve the objectives of the community based component of the FINPAC project, partnership will take place at national level between Red Cross Societies, National Meteorological Services, National Disaster Management Offices and in some countries, NGOs. Community workshops will be undertaken, community action plans created or revised and implementation of a pilot project will be undertaken by communities with support from the other partners.

Capacity

Through engagement with and input into the products of National Meteorological Services, communities will have greater access to and understanding of weather and climate information in the Pacific region.

Governed

The FINPAC project is coordinated by SPREP and the community component is implemented in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, University of South Pacific, National Meteorological Services and National Red Cross Societies. There is also close involvement of National Disaster Management Offices.
