Description
The partnership aims at documenting coastal archaeological sites in the Rock Islands of Palau endangered by the effects of climate change; more specifically the danger of sea-level rise.
The project conducted a series of field campaigns in Palau-Rock Islands. Survey methodology included boat-survey along coast lines and remote sensing operations using drones. Archaeological site locations were recorded in a georeferenced database with detailed GPS coordinates. Where possible sites were surveyed with a dedicated DJI Mavic 2 drone with PPK GPS. Surveyed sites with archaeological remains were documented using photogrammetry. For approximately 70% of the sites 3D terrestrial digital elevation models through orthophotos were generated. In cooperation with Koror State and HPO, LIDAR data from the Palau Automated Land And Resource Information Systems (PALARIS) were integrated to create a high resolution digital elevation model (DEM). Through these remote sensing data we were able to project flooding scenarios and specifically target areas with high potential of impact. In total, 235 km coastline was surveyed on 89 islands and more than 160 previously unrecorded sites were detected and documented. The data reveals a dense relict cultural landscape with house platforms, ramps and canoe-docks. The archaeological site data will be integrated into the PALARIS database as well as into the cultural heritage management plan of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Rock Islands Southern Lagoon' of Palau. It will also be made open access through the iDAI-World research data infrastructure of the German Archaeological Institute.
Local workshops with park rangers and HPO staff to introduce remote sensing technologies and usage of drones for archaeological research. Participation of park rangers, HPO staff and students in field campaigns to provide first hand and hands-on expertise in conducting field research with modern technologies. In public talks, the results of the survey are presented and the importance of preserving archaeological remains are highlighted. In the framework of outreach activities, local schools were invited to visit sites and guide tours are conducted, particularly through a parallel project on the geo-archaeological research on monumental architecture on Babeldaob.
Field campaigns and data analysis are designed and implemented in collaboration with the Palau Resource Institute. Permits and access to sites are coordinated with Koror State Office and the Palau Historic Preservation Office (HPO) Staff for Archaeological Research. HPO staff provide support in form of contacts to state institutions (Governor and Koror State) and communicate, explain and clarify information for research permits. HPO staff are also involved in communication with traditional leaders and responsible for documenting oral history.
