Description
Uganda has one of the world’s youngest populations. Over 75% of its population is below the age of 30. Youth unemployment remains a serious challenge though with 41% of youth (between 18-30 years), or 9.3 million, not engaged in work, education or training. In addition to these country-wide challenges, the Acholi region faced over 20 years of civil war that forced families into extreme poverty, instability, and unemployment that continues today. In 2021, it was estimated that 68% of the population in the region are living below the poverty line. (Uganda Bureau of Statistics) By working together with local fashion entrepreneurs, Artisan Global believes that the fashion industry can be a part of the solution to the unemployment crisis in Uganda by equipping young women with high quality training and introducing them to local, regional, and international market opportunities.
Artisan Global carries out courses in three terms (three months each): Basic (Introduction to tailoring), Intermediate, and Advanced Design led by two Ugandan designers. The classes take place either in a morning session or afternoon session to ensure the women are still able to maintain their other obligations during the week (i.e. domestic responsibilities, farm work). In addition to the regular classes taught at the center, the students attend educational field trips and local networking events (i.e. Northern Uganda Fashion Week), broadening their skills and knowledge of the industry. Guest lecturers are hosted from other regions of Uganda in order to expand cross-regional collaboration and introduce the students to an array of fashion styles and skill sets. These lectures include insights on marketing, social media, branding, etc.
The Artisan Center Manager (Abalo Beatrice Oyo) monitors the attendance of the courses and is the point of contact to address any challenges that may arise that affect the womens’ attendance. Beatrice carries out individual interviews and evaluations with the students at the beginning of the program, mid-way and at the end of the program. The progress indicators include attendance rate and the fashion course completion rate. Throughout the duration of the course, the on-site Media Director, Odongkara Emmanuel Okeny, documents the fashion course through media (film and photography) to demonstrate the progress of each student and the collective group. His intentional storytelling provides visual feedback on the impact of the trainings and also encourages the students to learn how to tell their own stories through fashion.

Economically disadvantaged young women (ages 18-30 years) with limited access to formal education (average student dropped out of formal education before secondary school) The Artisan Global team has carried out grassroots research and local marketing campaigns (flyers, social media, radio) to identify females who are interested in fashion design courses and starting their own fashion businesses but require sponsorship in order to participate. Based on the criteria of average monthly income and education level, the instructors are ensuring that the initiative targets economically disadvantaged young women who have had limited access to formal education.
