    Description
    Description

The partnership with the islands of Curaçao aims to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable energy systems. Our core mission is to develop science-based roadmaps towards complete decarbonisation of the electricity generation sector, engage local stakeholders, and secure investments for sustainable projects. Targeted achievements include assessing energy demand, modelling energy scenarios, and identifying viable renewable energy solutions. Together, we envision a collective impact of showcasing the feasibility of sustainable transitions, inspiring global action, and fostering a greener, more resilient future for islands and beyond.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

The implementation methodologies of the partnership between the GTI Foundation and the Government of Curaçao, are meticulously crafted to ensure the successful execution of the “100% RES Island Initiative” in Curaçao. Central to these methodologies are collaborative strategies and processes that leverage the collective expertise and resources of each partner organization. The implementation begins with comprehensive assessment activities, including data gathering which is carried out locally with the Government of Curaçao easing the process, and via literature reviews. This foundational phase lays the groundwork for the development of scenarios through techno-economic optimization, facilitated by the expertise of ITC and GTI Foundation’s Specialists. Local stakeholders are actively engaged throughout the process, ensuring that their insights and preferences are incorporated into the identification of the best scenario for Curaçao. Project teasers and island project maps are then created to guide the implementation phase, providing transparent financial information to attract investors and secure funding. The partnership leverages the communication channels established between the GTI Foundation and the Government of Curaçao, to facilitate decision-making and ensure alignment with project objectives.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The arrangements for capacity-building and technology transfer within the partnership between the GTI Foundation and Curaçao Government are meticulously designed to empower stakeholders with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive sustainable energy transitions in Curaçao. Through a multifaceted approach, activities are tailored to achieve concrete outputs that facilitate the adoption of renewable energy technologies and practices. Skill development is prioritized through comprehensive training aimed at equipping local professionals with expertise in renewable energy planning, implementation, and management. Infrastructure enhancement initiatives focus on upgrading existing energy infrastructure and developing new renewable energy facilities to support the transition to clean energy sources. Policy support measures are carried out with the joint effort of international partners and GTI Foundation’s team of experts to create an enabling environment for renewable energy investments and regulatory frameworks that incentivize sustainable practices. Fostering partnerships with industry stakeholders and research institutions facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration, allowing for the exchange of best practices and lessons learned. Financial mechanisms are suggested to provide incentives for renewable energy projects and attract private foreign investments, ensuring the sustainability of initiatives beyond the partnership's duration. Monitoring and innovation practices are integrated into project activities to track progress and identify opportunities for improvement. By investing in capacity-building and technology transfer, the partnership aims to empower local stakeholders, catalyze sustainable development, and pave the way for a greener and more resilient energy future in Curaçao.

    Coordination mechanisms

The partnership between the GTI Foundation and the Curaçao Government is a Memorandum of Understanding to incentivize a joint collaborative effort aimed at advancing the 100% RES (Renewable Energy Sources) Island Initiative in Curaçao.

The GTI Foundation leads project coordination, leveraging its expertise in sustainability on islands and its multi-actor network. The Curaçao Government provides local insights and support, while the Instituto Tecnologico de Canarias (ITC) contributes technical expertise in scenario development.

Decision-making is collaborative. GTI Foundation delivers the different scenarios towards 100% RES for electric power generation, based on the joint effort from all three different entities. Afterwards, the selection of the best scenario is carried out via consultation rounds which gather together the GTI Foundation, Curaçao Government representatives and local stakeholders ensuring decisions align with project objectives and scientific evidence via consultation rounds.

Evaluation methods include stakeholder feedback and impact assessments. Key performance indicators, embedded in the GTI Observatory Index, track progress, while stakeholder consultations gauge satisfaction, identify the most suitable scenario within the scenario portfolio and suggest areas for improvement. Impact assessments measure the project's effect on energy security and environmental sustainability.

The progress is communicated through collaborative meetings involving high-level stakeholders and dedicated channels facilitated by the GTI Foundation. These channels include, but are not limited to, social media posts, publications in the GTIO Magazine, and updates disseminated to GTIO members. These actions are entitled to update stakeholders on developments, challenges, and achievements, while adaptation procedures allow for flexibility in response to changing circumstances. The findings of Curaçao, as well as those from Rodrigues and Tonga, will be showcased during the "SIDS4" conference in Antigua and Barbuda. Furthermore, these findings will be comprehensively expounded upon in the GTI Report concerning the "100% RES Islands Initiative". In essence, the partnership's coordination mechanisms place significant emphasis on efficient communication, inclusive decision-making processes, rigorous evaluation, and adaptive management strategies. These aspects collectively contribute to the effective execution of the "100% RES Island Initiative" in Curaçao.
