COMMITMENT 1 MARINE RESERVES
We continue to be involved with working in 31 no take marine reserves across Mexico, while continuing our strategy of marine restoration in 12 communities through our work monitoring marine reserves, integral management zones (IMZ) and artificial reefs. We have participated in the design and implementation of 72% of the fish refuges in Mexico.
Challenges faced in implementation
Getting buy-in in each community, particularly in areas with many permit holders and stakeholders. The time to create fish refuges can also vary greatly, from just a few months, to several years.
Beneficiaries
Small-scale fishing sector (cooperatives, fishers, permit holders).
Actions
We have created mix-gender citizen science monitoring teams in each community. These survey divers (over 200 people) collect reliable information for the management of the marine reserves and act as spokespeople in their communities.
