Progress report for
Global Ocean Refuge System
Achievement at a glance
Since our voluntary commitment in 2017, Marine Conservation Institute has awarded 10 Global Ocean Refuges; marine protected areas (MPAs) that are recognized as outstanding examples of effective conservation, actively safeguarding some of the worlds most critical ocean habitats, sustaining biodiversity and recovering populations of marine life. Marine Conservation Institutes objective for the award is to bring special recognition to nations, decision makers, communities and site managers who effectively protect their marine ecosystems and to incentivize better ocean protection worldwide. Our goal is that this network grows and inspires nations around the world to strongly protect 30% of the oceans most important places by 2030.\\r\\n\\r\\nEach Global Ocean Refuge must demonstrate a strong management team, a clear plan to conserve biodiversity, and effective monitoring and enforcement efforts in place. These blue parks also support healthy oceans, sequester carbon and contribute to regional economies. Countries with Global Ocean Refuges include Australia, The Bahamas, Colombia, France, Indonesia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Portugal, Tanzania and the United States.\\r\\n\\r\\nAll told the Global Ocean Refuge System now totals over 1.5 million square kilometers of ocean with conservation standards that we know protect the ocean for generations to come. By recognizing, valuing, and visiting these blue parks, we encourage more countries to meet this critical standard going forward.Beneficiaries
