Progress report for
Mainstreaming ocean conservation and sustainable fisheries in Mexico through effective participation and citizen science.
Achievement at a glance
Seven small-scale fisheries are already under a Fishing Improvement Project (FIP) scheme and making progress based on the Marine Stewardship Standard (MSC). These fisheries are clams, penshell, yellowtail, ocean tilefish, giant squid, Caribbean lobster, and red snapper.
Additionally, COBI continues supporting the small-pelagic fishing industry in maintaining the MSC certification obtained in 2018.
Three training workshops on MSC, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Fair Trade standards for sustainable fishing, as well as Fishery Improvement Projects, were implemented in collaboration with the Mexican government, specifically the Congress and Executive (Conapesca and Inapesca).
Challenges faced in implementation
Mexican elections in the year of 2018 represented a challenge. In this period authorities tend to deviate from their previous commitments, and sustainability generally faces difficulties. At the moment, Mexico has a new executive administration and Congress with new priorities and political goals, to which we are getting familiar with. We are hoping to build a fructiferous relationship with the new public officers.Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of these actions are small-scale and industrial fishers in Mxico, as well as government institutions in charge of fisheries management and research in Mexico. Because these projects have tackled non-sustainable practices that affects, marine resources and the fishing sector in overall are beneficiaries.
