Progress report for
Ecoship
Achievement at a glance
Since the Ocean Conference, Peace Boat has been building momentum and advocating for greener cruising, with Ecoship featured in several industry publications and at events including Sea Trade Miami, Sea Trade Japan and Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific in Shanghai, where Ecoship was one of the top-table presenters. Ecoship has been delighted with the strong positive response from the shipping and cruising industries, and the increased attention to the urgent need for more sustainable innovations. Ecoship has also been featured in several events related to oceans and climate, including Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, COP23, and most recently EarthXOcean.Peace Boat signed a letter of intent (LOI) in May 2017 with the Finnish shipbuilding company Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Inc. to construct Ecoship. This was announced during Nor-Shipping, Scandinavia's biggest maritime trade fair, by Peace Boat director and founder Yoshioka Tatsuya, Arctech CEO Esko Mustamaki, and Classification Society DNV GL Senior Vice President / Regional Manager North Europe, Jon Rysst.
Significantly, further progress has also been made in modifications and updates of the overall design to take the ship forward in the construction phase. These include the green heart and lungs of the Ecoship - the plant kingdom. Spanning five decks, this plant kingdom is designed by award-winning Grant Associates and will be one of the ship's main meeting spaces for the onboard community, as well as a very important element for the operation of the ship. It will absorb surplus technical water, utilize compost from organic onboard waste and revitalize the vessels air through CO2 capture and O2 release. It will also be a key element of the HVAC system. The species in the plant kingdom will be chosen for their adaptability to the ships conditions and will produce vegetables for consumption and education onboard.
