Progress report for
Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN)
Achievement at a glance
GCRMN has made significant progress in preparation of regional analyses on coral reef status and trends. A \"Coral Reef Status Report for the Western Indian Ocean\" was launched in December 2017 at the 32nd General Meeting of the International Coral Reef Initiative. A pre-release version of the Executive Summary of the report \"Status and Trends of Coral Reefs of the Pacific\" was presented at a high-level coral reef symposium in Fiji to mark the start of the International Year of the Reef and the Pacific coral reef biennium, in the presence of Fiji Prime Minster Frank Bainimarama as well as Head of UN Environment Erik Solheim and UN SG\'s Envoy on Oceans Peter Thompson. These reports provide authoritative assessment of coral reef change at the regional level as well as national summaries, based on tens of thousands surveys provided by a range of partners. Wide-ranging impacts of bleaching in the Western Indian Ocean are documented, whereas the Pacific analysis shows a relatively stable coral cover over the past 25 years. The findings offer some hope by showing that local management and pollution reduction efforts are important resilience-building strategies while climate mitigation gains pace. It is clear that reefs are under threat, but if we take the right action to protect them, based on best available data and analyses, we won\'t have to lose them.<br>
