Background
As part of the 2025 High-level Political Foru on sustainable development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs will organize a side event titled “Initiating the UN Decade – an Implementation Plan for Sustainable Transport”. The side event will focus on the preparations of the upcoming United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport and the associated Implementation Plan.
In 2023, the General Assembly declared the first ever United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport to start in 2026. The General Assembly, through resolution 78/148 titled “Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals” also called the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) to develop an Implementation Plan for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, in collaboration with the UN Regional Commissions and in consultation with the Member States, the United Nations system and all other relevant stakeholders. To fulfil this mandate, DESA has been conducting extensive consultations, in collaboration with the UN Regional Commissions, with the Member States, the United Nations system, civil society, academia, multilateral development banks and other stakeholders, in person and online.
After extensive consultations, DESA and the UN Regional Commissions have developed a draft annotated outline of the Implementation Plan to guide the drafting process. This side event will provide an opportunity for Member States and relevant stakeholders to discuss the draft annotated outline of the Implementation Plan of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport and to provide direct feedback to DESA. It will also provide a platform to share experiences from other UN Decades and selected examples from sustainable transport efforts undertaken by Member States and other stakeholders so far.
