United Nations – MoST Joint Capacity Building Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals

To improve the innovation capacities of a range of stakeholders, especially in the lease developed countries (LDCs) and selected middle income developing countries (MICs), and key partners for international partnerships, UN DESA (Department of Economic and Social Affairs) with the support of the 2030 Agenda Sub-Fund of the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund contributed by the Government of China, together with the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MoST) and ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), in collaboration with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) and the EC(European Commissions), prepared a STI workshop, in Guilin, Guangxi Province in December 2019. The workshop followed up to the Global Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals, which is part of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM), mandated by the 2030 Agenda.

The workshop combined a 6-day workshop for STI policies with a 3-day study visit. The core areas focused on 1) creating an enabling environment for STI for the SDGs; 2) platforms and mechanisms for STI collaboration; and 3) emerging STI concepts, opportunities and challenges.

Through the activities of the workshop, including presentations, discussions and field visits, the ability of all participants to prompt sustainable development through technological innovation was enhanced. By reviewing country/region specific cases, based on scenario analysis, the workshop offered hands-on sessions for participants to apply “theories” and carry out designs on innovation parks and trading opportunities. The workshop also explored ways to create opportunities for collaborations on physical spaces and online platforms.
