Background
The Sustainable Transport Day at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, will focus on preparing for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035). The event aims to highlight sustainable transport's role in achieving the SDGs and to generate inputs for the Decade’s Implementation Plan. The plan will address all transport modes—maritime, inland, and aviation—while aligning with broader SDG objectives, climate action, and poverty reduction.
The event will emphasize the urgency of decarbonizing transport, as current NDCs are insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5⁰C target. It aims to identify effective ways to develop and implement low-carbon and resilient transport strategies that address policy, technical, and financial gaps while leveraging the third revision cycle of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs 3.0). Progressive and ambitious NDCs, supported by diversified funding strategies such as blended finance and green bonds, are essential for transitioning to sustainable transport systems.
The event will also highlight the importance of resilient and inclusive transport designs that address climate pressures while fostering equity through gender-informed approaches. Governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders will share challenges and showcase successful transport action plans already integrated—or planned for integration—into their NDCs, contributing to the global emission trajectory aligned with the Paris Agreement.
