Background

The Coalition on STI for Africa's Development and the International Science Council, with support from UN DESA and UN ECA, will organize an expert-level capacity-building workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Africa's Development.
This virtual workshop (25 June 2025, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM New York time) responds to urgent calls from the 2025 STI Forum and global frameworks like the Pact for the Future and Global Digital Compact to bridge STI divides and strengthen science-policy interfaces. Designed for African diplomats, the session will provide foundational knowledge and practical tools to navigate STI in multilateral negotiations, with a focus on AI governance, digital transformation, and science diplomacy.
Through interactive panels and breakout discussions, participants will:
- Explore how to apply STI Forum outcomes (e.g., inclusive innovation, financing) to UN processes
- Examine Africa-specific case studies of STI for diplomacy and development
- Identify partnerships to leverage the UN’s Technology Facilitation Mechanism and African science systems
Featuring leading African scientists, UN experts, and Mission representatives, the workshop will address critical gaps in STI capacity while fostering actionable strategies for sustainable development.
