Niger

Progress on achieving SDG 6

Niger has abundant groundwater and surface water resources which constitute the bulk of the country's water resources.

From a hydraulic point of view, the proportion of the population with sustainable access to a source of drinking water improved over the period 2014-2019, from 42.4% to 55.1 %. This performance could be explained by the construction of major hydraulic works, namely: (i) 11,155 Modern Water Point equivalents to serve 2,788,750 people in 278,875 households and 1,677 other Modern Water Point equivalents were rehabilitated to restore drinking water services to 419,250 people in 41,950 households; (ii) in urban areas, 39,527 private connections, 544 standpipes and 595.90 km of pipes have been built and have reached more than 667,270 people.

In addition, the following were also carried out over the 2017-2020 period: (i) 174 cemented village wells; (ii) 860 boreholes equipped with human-powered pumps and (iii) 621 autonomous water stations.
