    Description
    Description
Zero Waste” is a goal defined as waste management philosophy that involves preventing the wastage, using the resources more efficient, reviewing the reasons for waste formation, preventing or minimizing waste formation, and collecting and recovering waste at source separately. The project, led by First Lady Erdogan, quickly adopted by Union of Municipalities of Turkey together with many other institutions and municipalities in Turkey. The Union has prepared a roadmap in line with the guidance published by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and has begun to take measures to implement the project. The service buildings of the Union removed use of plastic materials, papers, paper cups, paper towel and teabags. Porcelain glasses, glass cups, metal spoons and hand dryers were introduced.New trash bins were brought for each floor to facilitate separation of waste. In order to prevent paper waste, e-signature system was adopted in official correspondences. One of the parking lots of the Union was spared for the separation of waste products only. Water machines were introduced to prevent use of plastic glasses. In addition to internal measures, the Union has also launched various campaigns, competitions and conferences to advertise the project and spread knowledge at local level in order for its members to adopt similar policies. Municipalities implementing the project successfully and setting example for other were rewarded by the Union during the Conference held 27-28 October 2020 with the participation of many municipalities.
    Expected Impact

The Union's adoption of the project has already shown its impact. There has been considerable amount of saving from the budget. Expenses were decreased as a result. The level of awareness among the personnel regarding environmental issues, due to trainings during the transition process, has reached an all-time high. On various occasions, visiting delegations from Turkey and abroad have stated their admirations for the way the Union implements the project.
